Mercedes cars are generally very reliable but on occasion the head unit can fail. The symptoms vary but usually the outcome is that the unit appears completely dead. This is also confirmed in the instrument cluster when selecting Audio, Media or Nav it shows just a series of dashes. This is basically confirming that the head unit is not communicating with the car. When this occurs we are no longer able to communicate with the head unit using our diagnostics so the unit itself is irreparable.
We can replace this with a refurbished unit that will be installed, security coded, loaded with the latest firmware and also loaded with the latest maps available too. Maps are loaded onto the hard drive of the Comand unit, and on Audio 20 we will include a new SD card with the latest maps when required. Vehicles with Becker Map Pilot cartridge in the glove box will continue to use the same maps.
Our warranty will cover this unit for two years for complete peace of mind.
There are two types of head unit in these cars and two levels which are identifiable in our HEAD UNIT CHECKER
NTG4.5 Audio 20. (SA Code 523) Has small screen with large border and Becker Map Pilot Cartridge in glove box
NTG4.5 Comand. (SA Code 527) Has built-in sat nav and large screen with small border.
NTG5.1 Audio 20. (SA Code 522) Has large screen with no border and Garmin SD card sat nav.
NTG5.1 Comand. (SA Code 531) Has built-in sat nav, large screen with no border.
Installation of the replacement head unit can take up to 5-6 hours too complete. Physical installation is generally fairly brief but security coding, firmware updates and then loading of maps can take many hours. See INSTALLATION INFORMATION tab for details.
